Choosing or changing the topic of the thesis research

The topic of the thesis should be formulated within:

• the research areas in specialty, according to:
  • the topics of the university’s priority research, according to:
    • the research priorities in science and technology of Ukraine
      

Formulating the topic of the thesis research postgraduate student should conduct an analysis of already defended researches in the field he has chosen, using the E-Catalogue  of Thesis topics by going to http://topicthesis.eka.hneu.edu.ua/

Approval of the topics of Ph.D postgraduates’ thesis papers occurs during the first month since the day of nomination in three stages:

The first stage: Approval of the topics of Ph.D postgraduates’ thesis papers at the department meeting where his or her research advisor works at and where the postgraduate is allotted to the period of training. Postgraduate submits “Thematic justification” to the department and scientific developments he or she has already completed if applicable (articles, abstracts, scientific projects, manuscripts of thesis, etc.) according to the intended topic of the research; makes a report at the department meeting.

The second stage: The meeting of the Committee for approving the subjects of University’s applicants’ research works (hereinafter – the Commitee).

7 days before the appointed meeting of the Committee postgraduate student submits completed form of “Thematic justification” with an extract from the minutes of the department meeting on the consideration of his or her  dissertation subject to the chairman and members of the Commission

Following the meeting, the Commitee is able to (one of the following)

• agree with the given wording of the subject of the research paper and petition the Board of Studies for its approval;
• Recommend the applicant to clarify the topic (purpose, object or subject of the research) and agree on a new wording of the topic (purpose, object or subject of the research) with the research advisor. In this case, the consideration of the topic will be continued at the next Committee meeting.

 At the Commitee meeting, the postgraduate presents the subject of the research paper to the chairman and  to committee members, justifies its topicality, appropriateness of the research realization on the specified topic, its connection with the research priorities by background, scientific researches of the University and science and technology of Ukraine.

At the Committee meeting, in addition to the postgraduate students, their research advisors may be present.

The third stage: approval of applicants’s research papers on the University senate via open ballot

In case of refusal of research topic’s approval with the reasons and recommendations for its refinement an applicant has to correct mistakes and re-execute stages 1-3.

After approval of the new / clarified topic of the research paper, the postgraduate has to make an appropriate entry in his individual work plan with the number and date of University senate’s minutes where the decision was made
